A shadow economy for unlicensed weight-loss medications is propelled by TikTok fitness influencers and vendors on messaging platforms, based on new investigations.
Investigational Drug Gaining Popularity Online
The experimental drug, which remains in research studies, is being advertised by social media influencers for its supposed fat-burning effects. Viewers are encouraged to message these accounts privately for source information, while also obtaining discount codes.
Active Trade on Social Networks
Separately, a robust market exists on Telegram, where groups with numerous of members share “before and after” images, administration instructions and claims of rapid UK delivery. Sellers promote the drug there before directing buyers to WhatsApp for transactions.
Understanding Retatrutide
This medication is an experimental injection created by American pharmaceutical company Eli Lilly. The treatment affects three gut hormones – glucagon-like peptide-1, glucose-dependent insulinotropic polypeptide and pancreatic hormone. Preliminary studies indicate it could help patients reduce up to 25% of their body weight. Nicknamed the “triple G”, the substance is being hailed online as the next Ozempic.
Healthcare Professionals Voice Worries
However, doctors and chemists have cautions that the sale of what remains an unlicensed drug in the United Kingdom is a cause for concern and could lead to users administering substances of uncertain source.
Several experts stated the popularity for retatrutide could be connected to the increasing price of licensed slimming products such as Mounjaro.
Regulatory Position and Implementation
Marketing the unapproved drug on social media or messaging apps is prohibited in the UK, as it is an unapproved medication that cannot be marketed or supplied for human use under the British medical regulations.
Several influencers try to sidestep the regulations by referring to the drug as a “research chemical” or citing it as “not for human consumption”. The substance is not a controlled drug, but advertising and distribution can still violate pharmaceutical, marketing, and customer regulations, risking penalties, legal action or prison.
Platform Response and Material Elimination
According to the social media company, the service has removed violative material and prohibited related keywords and search suggestions. The organization stated it was dedicated to maintaining the platform safe and allocating resources in strengthening enforcement strategies.
Digital Marketplace Activities
Investigations also found groups with up to 9,000 participants marketing the experimental drug using Telegram's built-in discovery tool, which operates like a online catalog. Entering “retatrutide” immediately displays groups with thousands of members, filled with photos of slimming results, glowing testimonials and step-by-step instructions for preparing or injecting at home.
Within minutes of joining one community, a seller shared contact information, where most transactions occur. The vendor provided an guidebook and promised shipping within two days. When asked whether the substance was genuine, one vendor said: “You can’t be sure.” Another shared a photo of a supposed laboratory certificate. None inquired about weight, health issues or past usage.
Product Details and Costs
Within these groups, messages display dark colored packages with Royal Mail stickers, claiming to contain fresh supplies. One communication stated: “It took eight of us to load them this morning.”
Buyers can select between dry substance containers, mixed at residence with purified liquid, or pre-filled pens typically sold at 160 pounds for 20 milligrams. When asked how long a pen should be used, vendors give contradictory responses varying between a few weeks to “depends on your body”.
Platform Moderation and Safety Actions
A representative for the messaging service stated it regularly moderated harmful material on its platform including material that encouraged the “misuse of controlled medications”. The company added that it removed “millions of pieces of harmful content each day”.
Medical Professional Cautions
“Individuals are administering materials they can’t verify. Even if the science behind retatrutide is sound, these digital products may not contain what they claim,” said Jason Murphy, the head of pharmacy at a pharmacy service.
Dr Crystal Wyllie of an online medical service linked the surge in demand to recent cost increases for authorized slimming medications such as Mounjaro. “With costs rising, patients are using online platforms. But counterfeit treatments are extremely risky. You cannot know what’s inside or whether the conditions they were produced in was clean,” she said.
Her team has already seen patients injured by self-injection from unverified sources. “We recognize the frustration, but purchasing from messaging apps or communication platforms is taking chances with your well-being,” said Wyllie. “These substances could be contaminated or improperly measured.”
Manufacturer Statement
A spokesperson from the pharmaceutical company said retatrutide was in third stage clinical trials and had not been reviewed or approved by any government authority globally. “Therefore at this time no one can sell [it] for human use,” they said, adding that any item “misleadingly claiming itself as a company investigational product not yet approved … may expose users to potentially serious medical dangers”.
