Patients Discontinuing Anti-Obesity Medications Regain Weight Four Times Faster Than Dieters

Weight management often requires ongoing approaches.

Fresh analysis indicates that individuals who stop using blockbuster slimming jabs like Wegovy and Mounjaro can put back on lost weight at a significantly accelerated pace than those who end traditional lifestyle programs.

Research printed in a leading medical journal shows that while obese individuals often shed substantial amounts of their body weight while on the medication, the mass returns at an estimated rate of 0.8 kg per month after stopping.

"Individuals purchasing such medications need to be aware of the potential of fast rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," cautioned expert Dr. Susan Jebb.

This pace of recovery implies a reversion to pre-treatment weight within about a year and a half.

Comparing Treatments

The study, which reviewed 37 of trials involving thousands of participants, contrasted the outcomes of these new drugs with older methods.

The team emphasize that people who lose weight through dieting typically experience a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.

The Reason for the Quick Regain

Doctors propose the way of the injections explains the heightened regain.

These medications copy a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which controls hunger.

"Long-term administration of the hormone levels several times higher than normal may cause the body to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could diminish sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a nutrition researcher.

"Withdrawal of this hormone supplement results in hunger is no longer kept in check, making overeating far more likely."

An Ongoing Disease?

The NHS recommend the jabs for people with obesity-related health risks, alongside prescribed diet and exercise modifications.

Many experts say that, considering the likelihood of relapse, the therapy might need to be long-term.

This perspective is supported by drug manufacturers, who note that the results "highlight the chronic nature of excess weight," similar to managing diseases like hypertension.

Patient Testimonies

People who have come off the medication explain a powerful return of cravings.

"I experienced something activating and I was suddenly ravenous," described an individual.

The struggle is worsened if individuals have not developed permanent dietary or behavioural changes during therapy.

Widespread Adoption

Figures indicate that a significant number of people in the UK have tried weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with interest remaining high.

  • Adoption is greater among women than males.
  • The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest usage rates.
  • A large proportion obtain the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Finally, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are potent tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic cure and maintained weight loss hinges on combined behavioural support.
