Groups also flooded adjacent streets and sought to penetrate parliament, where the government had initially planned the public viewing.

Political Legacy and Ethnic Support

Although primarily recognized as an political challenger, Odinga became head of government in 2008 and also formed a political pact with the president last year in a public service marked by changing partnerships.

He generated intense commitment among followers, especially in his ethnic group based in western Kenya, many of whom believe he was prevented from obtaining the nation's leadership by vote manipulation.

Many of Odinga's mourners, who were not yet born in 1991 when Kenya became a pluralistic political system, paid tribute to Odinga's work as an activist.
